Valentini Frank: I'm so confused about this guy. According to DracTour, Valentini Frank, a Romanian scientist and physician, is considered one of Mary Shelley's inspirations in her creation of "Frankenstein." Shelley had a number of paramours, one of whom was from Sibiu, and it was this lover who informed Shelley about Frank's life and the various lurid experiments he was reputed to have conducted.
From what I caught of Radu's story, there was a boy who suffered from elephantism. His family kept him chained up in their basement. He escaped one day and ran to the church. He exclaimed "I am Frankenstein. I am Frankstein.", and scared all the people in the church. It's this boy who's buried in the tomb. This story was told to Shelley by one of her many lovers, and it was the inspiration for Frankstein. We supposedly know this because of a letter Shelley wrote to Bryon. In either case, according to many sources on the web, Shelley maintained she derived the name Frankstein from a dream-vision. |
